Contract: Full time and permanent

About the Centre for AI and Climate

We are building the tools that enable the application of machine learning to accelerate climate action. We are a small but rapidly growing team dedicated to finding the most strategic uses for machine learning to support climate action, and providing the digital tools and resources necessary to support the development of machine learning driven applications.

Job Overview

We are seeking a full stack developer to lead the development of a climate data platform to support climate action. Net zero systems will require optimised data discovery and data flows to enable renewables-heavy electricity networks, efficient zero-emission transport, deforestation-free supply chains, and better emissions reporting. Data access and discovery represent a key bottleneck at present. This role will lead the creation of the platform.

We are looking for someone who can rapidly develop an MVP, talk to prospective users, and iterate to build out the platform. We are looking for someone with the potential to grow into a leadership role - but we are focused more on aptitude and attitude rather than experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a rapid MVP for a web-based climate data platform

  • Determine the best code base and architecture for the platform

  • Design the initial UI and UX of the platform to be clear and easy to use

  • Integrate easy-to-use analytics into platform to inform decision making and design

  • Iterate on the development of the platform on the basis of (lots of) conversations with early potential users.

  • Build out the full climate data platform with the support of a wider team

  • Oversee development and documenting of REST APIs

  • Where required present publicly on the platform, and draft the occasional blog post

Key requirements

  • Passionate about using data to accelerate the transition to net zero

  • 4+ years professional development experience developing responsive, interactive web-based applications

  • Start-up mindset: relentlessly resourceful, solutions orientated, willing to move quickly, willing to learn how to do things you can’t do currently, hack things together, and willingness to adapt to changing organisational needs

  • Advanced degree in computer science or similar

  • (Preferably) Experience using Azure, Google Cloud or AWS

  • Strong interest and ideally some experience in data science and machine learning

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Exceptional organisational skills with attention to detail, a sense of urgency and a drive to get stuff done

Benefits of working for the Centre for AI and Climate

  • Five weeks of paid time off

  • Family-friendly flexible working

  • Training & Development

  • Full benefits to be discussed together

Location

  • UK - Remote

How to apply

  • Send your CV, Github repo and a short cover note to pete@c-ai-c.org
